Write What You Like

From Austin Kleon:

The question every young writer asks is: “What should I write?”

And the cliched answer is: “Write what you know.”

This advice always leads to terrible stories in which nothing interesting happens.

The best advice is not to write what you know, it’s write what you like.

I’ve talked about working toward being who you want to be, rather than who you are before, but I really LOVE Austin’s take on the subject. To say I’ve been obsessed with this post since Erin Feldman shared it with me would be a gross understatement. There is so much truth and so much solid gold in Austin’s How To Steal Like An Artist post that all I want to say is this: do yourself a favor and go read it now and then go share it with literally everyone you know. Seriously… go… NOW!

And Austin, please… for the love of all things awesome, start selling this “Creativity Is Subtraction” print again… I need it.

    • I’m probably wrong, but I’ve found that the things people have related to most here on the site are usually the most selfish. Then again, I could just be crap rationalizing :)

  1. @MSchechter:disqus …first let me say that you are a very generous man.  You kindly share the gifts of others here and that is awesome.  Second…this was one fabulous share. Maybe I live with my head in a hole but, I had never heard of @AustinKleon before this post (hey @ErinFeldman:disqus why didn’t you tell me about Austin? 😉 ) His post “Steal Like An Artist” is mesmerizing and one that is worthy of revisiting…probably often!   While reading his post I kept thinking of different people in my life who would benefit from Austin’s wisdom and then it came to me….pretty much anyone would benefit from his wisdom.  Thank you Michael for sharing! Claudia

    • I had never heard of Austin either, this post is just so damn good (as is that Creativity is Subtraction poster which SHALL BE MINE!). Thanks for the kind words. I learn a ton from a lot of people who are a hell of a lot smarter than me. Always fun to share them.

    • LOVE everything is a remix. Think I shared the last episode here on the site (yet my goldfish memory and laziness prohibit me from confirming). Didn’t know you and Yuvi had this awesome sharing circle going on. We all fell left out now :)
