For a while now, I’ve wanted to create a free newsletter, for a variety of both selfless and selfish reasons (more on these in a second). I haven’t created it yet for a few reasons, the most obvious being, “why the hell would anyone subscribe to my email list”.
In addition to this very logical concern, I was worried about having enough value to offer without stretching myself even thinner than I already have. I’m also a big believer that we all get way too many emails…but I digress.
As whatever the hell it is I’m doing here continues to grow, I have a sneaking suspicion that earning the permission to send you a message is going to be important. I also know that I want to offer enough value so when those messages comes along that you just might be crazy enough to read them.
So what to do…and why to do it?
A Partner In Crime
After bouncing ideas around in my head for far too long, I started talking to my podcasting partner-in-crime, Mike Vardy. He had been thinking much along the same lines for his own site, yet had similar concerns. We rattled off what we’d been considering: a podcast featuring some solo or supplemental episodes that don’t really fit our usual Mikes on Mics format, some behind-the-scenes or somewhat off-topic writings, a monthly wrap-up for those who don’t want to check our sites regularly, and who knows what else.
Since we were so aligned, we figured why not pool our efforts and offer you twice the value for half the emails.
At first Vardy suggested that we might want to look at the paid membership route. While we seriously considered it, I’m not overly passionate about the paid membership model (and, actually, neither is Vardy). Even though we hope you’ll agree that what we offer is “premium” content, we want to feel free to experiment here. And while I am comfortable experimenting, I’m not comfortable experimenting on your dime.
What Should You Expect?
Once you subscribe you’ll get a welcome email that explains everything, but for the moment there will be a free podcast and a monthly wrap-up. Beyond that, we will be trying a few of the off-topic or behind-the-scenes posts we mentioned above as well as some other experiments we think up in order to see what you enjoy. We want to make this valuable and interesting for all of us, so there may be some failed experiments as we work on our “technique”.
Will We Be Selling Anything?
Yes, but we are confident that the free content will outweigh the occasional request to check out a paid project that we might be working on. Why are we so sure? Because if it doesn’t, you will quickly unsubscribe (which sort of defeats the whole purpose). Our goal with Mike Techniques is to create a place to offer free premium experiments with the hope that we to continue to earn permission to let you know when we have a paid offering. I’m nowhere near this point (although Vardy’s a bit further along here), but I’d rather be upfront about this eventuality now, than have you be upset with me later.
If this all sounds like an interesting experiment to you, then I encourage you to subscribe for free, follow along and let us know what you think.
