If you don’t know where you’re going…

You might end up someplace else…

I am a big fan of Yogi Berra (very important to note that I am not referring to the bear), he has a rich history in baseball and remains relevant through many of his memorable quotes. Berra has an endless string of Yogiisms and I could probably write a post a day for a year based on his unique insights, yet as I think of 2009 I find myself going back to the same quote over and over again. If you don’t know where you are going, you might end up someplace else.

This year will challenge many of us more than ever before and it is essential to have a game plan. Often we start out the year with a plan for success, but in 2009 organizations must plan for survival. There is little to no room for errors this year and a well-crafted plan will play a major role in you and your company seeing it through to the other side of these increasingly hard times.

The organizations that persevere need to have a clear vision and a plan to endure. Make sure that this vision is spread throughout your company to ensure that all of your employees are motivated and on the same page. Times like these breed fear and confusion and the best thing that leadership can do is communicate what needs to be done. Most importantly, everyone in your company needs to execute, execute, execute…

I would love to hear your plans for 2009 and the ways that you are communicating your vision. What are you doing to make sure that you and the company you work for see it through these difficult times?

Just in case you still need it, here is a bonus Yogiism to help you through:

When you come to a fork in the road, take it!

This is not a year to wait and see, this is a year for action.
