Do Better

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment when productivity and workflow—two words that have helped so many to take control of their lives—found themselves wrapped up in quotation marks and labeled as a joke. Yet there are few who would argue that the space surrounding these concepts is a shell of what it once was.

Concepts like David Allen’s Getting Things Done, Leo Babauta’s Zen Habits and Merlin Mann’s Inbox Zero continue to help millions, but much of the work they inspire has lost its way. The creation of new quality and meaningful advice on how to live a better life and do better work lives on, but it is being drowned out by seemingly clever, yet ultimately useless, life hacks and productivity porn.

The ideas of better productivity and sound workflows matter—especially for those who struggle to actualize their ambitions—but all too often the emphasis is on the wrong actions.

At some point people’s interest turned into an obsession. Many became so busy learning how to do better that they never actually did anything else. What people thought they wanted wasn’t what they needed, but in the world of page views, it’s what they got.

Many of those working in the space unintentionally wound up hurting those who needed help. Some have moved on, others decided to give people what they want, but a few continue to create meaningful work that helps people do better. With Workflowing, the goal is to unite those who need help with the ideas that can help them thrive. We want you to do better.

There are far too many people struggling to tap into far too much potential for this space not to matter. There’s too much useful work that actually helps people achieve more of their ambitions. It’s just buried underneath all of the crap. We don’t want to abandon or even change the productivity space, we’d rather do what is needed to clean it up. There’s a fair amount of work to be done, but we believe it’s possible and worthwhile.

So where does it start? With a challenge. Let’s do better. Let’s aim higher in our own work, spotlight what is truly useful and see what we can create together.

  2. I came to the site via a link as I was looking for… for… What WAS I searching for exactly?

    Isn’t that the problem with productivity sites? Endless tools to try, trails to follow, all in pursuit of the holy grail: creative emancipation and friction-free productivity.

    I read through most of the past 7 months of posts and believe that you have struck the perfect balance of consciousness-raising, tool-using and yes, listening. Where many other of the ‘lifehack’ genre speak, here there’s an implicit conversation as you keep us focused on what matters: making, enjoying, and improving.

    I expect the mission might get a tweak or two as you guys work on your respective projects, but I hope it don’t change much. I’ll keep an eye on you in my feedreader of choice (netnewswire) as I work out the kinks in my own blogging workflow at present: byword, butler and wordpress.

    Oh yeah, that’s it! I was looking for a NEW workflow of course! Maybe add keyboard maestro, alfred and/or textexpander in the mix. I didn’t find my holy grail, but did come away with much more courtesy of Wonderful site.
